How SMS counting works
SMS uses two alphabets. GSM-7 fits 160 characters in one message. Characters outside it, including many emoji and special symbols, switch the entire message to Unicode (UCS-2), lowering the limit to 70. Longer text is split into separately billed SMS segments, with 153 GSM-7 or 67 Unicode units because concatenation metadata uses part of each segment.
Savings tip: avoid emoji when they are not essential — a single emoji can double the cost by forcing Unicode. For verification messages, also try the OTP SMS validator.
